Many of our readers would most likely agree that being listed on the sex offender registry is probably pretty humiliating. A person listed on the registry is labeled for life in many cases, but that is just one of the long-term consequences of being convicted on sexual assault charges. The most serious types of sexual assault charges, like first- or second-degree criminal sexual conduct, come with the potential for years and years in a prison sentence. For one Ypsilanti Township man who was arrested recently, these consequences are exactly what he is facing.According to reports, the 27-year-old man was arrested because of incident that allegedly took place on March 22. The exact details weren't initially available, but the indications are that the charges involve alleged contact with a person under 13 years of age. The man is charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct, which carries a maximum prison term of 15 years. The case made news recently because the suspect was in court on May 7 to be arraigned.Allegations of sexual assault can ruin a person's life, even if the case ultimately ends with a suspect being cleared of any wrongdoing. It seems that in most cases the arrest and initial charges are what really make the news headlines, not the end result, and especially not if the defendant goes free. From a criminal defense standpoint, this man will now need to begin to assess his options. The police have had time to conduct their investigation in this case, and now the defendant and his defense team will need to do their own digging. Police and prosecutors take these types of cases very seriously, and the defendant is probably approaching the issue with the same seriousness, especially since it is his future on the line now.
