Registered sex offender faces more sex crimes allegations

By Daniel T. Geherin

Anyone who is listed on the sex offender registry in Michigan is going to have to live with the fact that they will be under a microscope for the rest of their lives. Having to register as a sex offender is one of the most serious consequences that someone who is convicted on sex crime charges will have to deal with, because this part of the criminal sentence still applies long after any prison sentence is served. That is why it is so important for someone facing allegations of sex crimes to fight the charges when they are still considered innocent until proven guilty - because after a conviction is handed down the realities of life will be much different.

Our readers may have seen the reports about one registered sex offender in Michigan who has once again landed on law enforcement radar. According to the reports, the 29-year-old man, who has been a registered sex offender since 2004, is now alleged to have attempted to lure young girls into his apartment by promising them drugs and money. This man was arrested on May 15, and he will be facing one felony charge as a result.

However, even though the felony that this man is facing carries a maximum sentence of four years - relatively light for a felony charge - he is facing a bigger problem. The reports indicate that the suspect is a habitual offender, which could get any potential sentence he receives upon conviction enhanced all the way up to a maximum of 15 years in prison.

"Innocent until proven guilty" is a legal mantra that has seemingly lost its potency in recent years, with many arrestees already convicted in the media before they even have an initial hearing on the charges. A criminal defense strategy that emphasizes an approach of doing everything possible to reduce or dismiss the charges early in the case can be of paramount importance, especially for someone who is already a registered sex offender.
