Most Ann Arbor, Michigan, residents have probably heard by now of the astonishing sexual assaults that were reported earlier this month by local girls who were on their way to school. Indications are that the alleged perpetrator, a male, rode up to a 17-year-old and two 11-year-olds at separate times and locations and either groped them or attempted to abduct them. All of the girls were able to escape the man and report the assaults to police. The perpetrator has since been arrested and now faces a lengthy prison sentence following eight serious sexual assault charges, as well as four counts of unlawful imprisonment and one count of interfering with a crime report.Police have indicated that the defendant is a repeat offender, having a criminal history that includes a 2006 charge of fourth degree criminal sexual conduct. He also has a 2008 conviction for assaulting a police officer.Allegations of sexual assault are extremely serious and very damaging for the person charged. The individual involved in the current case is facing harsh penalties, and the local community is shocked and outraged at the alleged conduct.Anyone facing sexual assault charges can expect a vigorous prosecution. There are various long-term consequences involved in such charges, beyond the specter of prison and possible requirements to register as a sex offender. A thorough and zealous criminal defense is the only thing that this defendant can hope for now that his name and picture have been all over the local news.Police investigations are exacting and detailed, and arrests are not made lightly, especially arrests under the current circumstances. But, everyone is entitled to competent criminal defense. Ann Arbor criminal defense attorney Daniel T.
