Driver who killed triathlete Karen McKeachie pleads to misdemeanor

CHELSEA, MI - A 70-year-old driver accused of hitting and killing Ann Arbor triathlete Karen McKeachie pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor Monday, March 6.

Terry Lee Lacroix said few words during his hearing before Judge Richard Conlin in Chelsea's 14-A3 District Court while a dozen of McKeachie's friends and family looked on.

He pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of moving violation causing death, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail.

McKeachie's husband, Lew Kidder, says they plan to advocate for the maximum penalty. Kidder believes Lacroix should have been charged with a manslaughter.

"I don't think it's appropriate," Kidder said about the charge after the plea Monday. "I think he's undercharged.
