Psychologist faces sexual assault allegations in Ann Arbor

Many times when someone is arrested, the last thing on that person's mind are the long-term consequences. That is because even for a first-time offender the immediate consequences - loss of a job because of the arrest, damage to a reputation and a stint in the county jail - can all be completely overwhelming at times. However, the long-term effects of an arrest, even without a subsequent conviction, could haunt a person for the rest of their lives. For one man arrested in Ann Arbor for sexual assault recently, this may be the case.According to a report, a 61-year-old man who was working as a local psychologist was in court recently to face allegations of sexual assault. The alleged victim was reportedly one of his patients. The defendant was formally charged with four counts of criminal sexual conduct on Monday, February 4.This case will be different that most other sexual assault charges, because there is a specific law in Michigan which prohibits a sexual relationship between a psychologist and a patient during the treatment period - and for two years after the treatment period. One of the unique challenges for the defense in this case will be that under this law the relationship cannot occur during that time period even if the patient gives consent.According to the report, the defendant has an extensive history as a mental health professional in the Ann Arbor area. However, these charges will undoubtedly have a significant effect on his prospects for future employment. The four criminal charges he is facing are misdemeanors, but they carry potential prison sentences of two years each. Going forward in this case, the criminal defense team will need to craft a tough strategy to ensure the best possible result.Source: Ann Arbor.com, "Ann Arbor psychologist charged in sexual assault of patient," John Counts, Feb. 7, 2013
