18-year-old man arrested for alleged involvement in sexual assaults

The U.S. Marshals got involved in a recent arrest in Michigan when they took an 18-year-old Detroit man into custody under suspicion that he was involved in two sexual assaults near the Eastern Michigan University campus. The Marshal's Fugitive Task Force apparently transported the man back to the Washtenaw County Jail where he was formally arraigned on the sexual assault charges. The Detroit man is now facing two counts of criminal sexual conduct after he is alleged to have had contact with two different women on back-to-back nights during the week of Sept. 3. As he sits in the Washtenaw County Jail he is being held on a bond set at $500,000, which authorities have claimed is needed because he may be a flight risk if released. If convicted, a criminal sexual conduct charge carries significant penalties. A potential prison sentence for anyone found guilty of this crime could reach up to 15 years. A conviction may also require an individual to register as a sex offender. Some of our previous posts have detailed how far-reaching a sex crimes case can be for the accused. Even a first-time offender can be burdened by long-term consequences. The criminal investigation in these types of cases is usually thorough, and prosecutors can be especially vigorous in their follow-up.Any Michigan resident who is unlucky enough to come under suspicion for sexual assault would be wise to seek out an experienced criminal defense attorney. An attorney will work hard to defend an individual against the charges while ensuring that his or her rights are not violated.Source: AnnArbor.com, "Detroit man arraigned on charges involving sexual assaults near EMU campus," John Counts, Sept. 14, 2012
